Throughout the year, the Downtown Development Authority’s First Friday Concert committee has been flooded with CDs, tapes, press packets and band bios for musical groups clamoring to play at Rome’s popular First Friday concert.

So the lineup for the upcoming season is essentially the cream of the crop, with the committee listening to each band’s music before making a decision.

“We do have a lot of choices,” said Ann Arnold, director of the Downtown Development Authority. “We have a large library to choose from and many of these groups are very good but we’re looking for something special.”

Arnold said bands must not only be able to deliver an entertaining performance but must provide good music suitable for all ages.

This season’s lineup begins with Atlanta-based Uptown Entertainment on May 4. The Motown group has been to Rome before and brings a strong reputation for entertaining Motown music as well as Top 40 hits and R&B honed from countless performances throughout Atlanta. Opening for the group will be Echizen Togei Daiko, a Japanese Drum Corps.

On June 1, Peachtree Station takes the stage at Bridgepoint Plaza.

“They’ve been together about 10 years and are pretty much a country rock band,” Arnold said. “They were so popular the last time they were here that the committee decided right away that we had to bring them back.”

Biscuit Burners come to Rome on July 6. This is the first time the North Carolina-based band will play in Rome, but Arnold said a band member has a connection to Rome which satisfied the committee’s desire to support local and area bands or bands with a Rome connection.

Scattered, Smothered and Covered makes their reunion on August 3. Arnold said the local band hasn’t played together in years and is using the First Friday concert as their reunion show. Broken Radios will be opening for the band.

Finishing up the season will be local country rockers KnecKDown who have been creating quite a buzz on the local music scene with regular local gigs as well as shows in Cartersville and as far as Alabama. “And as usual, the concerts are free to the public,” Arnold added.

First Friday concerts take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at Bridgepoint Plaza
